These two miniature Nativity scenes were both created in Oberammergau. I was blessed to attend the performances of the Passion play in 1980 (with a group of pilgrims led by Bishop Timothy Bavin) and 1984 (on a commercial coach tour with Terence and a mixed bag of tourists).
The walnut one is propped up on a pound coin (to let in a little more light and to give an indication of its size).
The triptych reminds me of an angel sheltering the Holy Family and also brings Psalm 91:4 to mind:
"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart".
It folds away during the year, hiding its treasure until Christmas comes around again, but hinting of blessings to come.
Both bring back wonderful memories of two different but equally wonderful experiences of the Passion Play, and I marvel at the tiny carvings and the amazing skills God gifts his people. Mary Cassidy |
