#542 Can we get an appointment?

Fr Sam writes

Last week I mentioned the school service that we hosted at St Paul’s and their massive key. Here it is in all its glory! More information about the event can be found on the TKAT website.

This Sunday we celebrate St Luke, evangelist and physician. It can be a bit hard to get an appointment with a doctor at the moment: we can only hope it’s a bit easier in eternity…

This Sunday: who’s coming to the party?

This Sunday the Church celebrates the evangelist St Luke, who composed both the gospel that bears his name and the Acts of the Apostles. He was a companion of St Paul and it is believed he was a physician, as well as an evangelist.

At St Nicholas, this Sunday is a Taizé Eucharist: the music will be simple chants, with silence and meditation.

A bit bazaar

The autumn bazaar will be on 7 November between 12 noon and 3pm in the St Paul’s Parish Rooms.

Grand Draw tickets are on sale now. These are available from Liz Gallagher or Teri Austen. The first prize is a Lovely Luxury Hamper, the second prize a Wine Hamper and there are many more prizes. We would be grateful for donations for the hampers. There is a sign-up list at the back of St Paul’s and St Nick’s. We would also be very grateful for donations of other suitable prizes!

Lesley Ruddock will be running the Tombola at the Bazaar and would be grateful for contributions for the stall – bottles, jars, cans, packets of biscuits, sweets, chocolates, toiletries, small gift items etc – almost anything that is not perishable. There will be a labelled box at the back of St Paul’s on Sundays for donations.

All Souls

Our annual All Souls service, praying for the departed, will take place at 6.15pm on Sunday 1 November. A list for names to be read out during the service will be available at St Paul’s and St Nicholas, or names can be submitted to the parish office by email.

Signed service at Woosehill

On Sunday 25 October, Revd Hannah Lewis will be coming to take the service at Woosehill Church in British Sign Language (BSL). It was such an amazing service last year and it’ll be great to welcome her back to preach and preside, along with her BSL interpreter Lixi. We also have Chris and Tom playing for the service. Revd Cara

This week’s calendar

On 19 October, the Church of England remembers Henry Martyn, a priest and missionary who devoted his short life to proclaiming the Christian faith in India and Persia.

Born in Cornwall in 1781, he was a brilliant scholar at Cambridge before travelling to India as a chaplain, where he learned local languages and helped translate the New Testament into Urdu, Persian and Arabic. He died in 1812, aged just 31, while travelling through what is now Turkey.

Martyn’s example reminds us that sharing the Gospel begins with a willingness to understand others, to meet them in their own language and culture, and to make the love of Christ known through patient and faithful service.
