#524 Follow me!

Fr Sam writes

Today is Corpus Christi, the celebration of the great gift of the Eucharist. We have a mass with procession and benediction this evening at 8pm, and it is a wonderful opportunity to focus more closely than we normally have a chance to on Christ’s presence in the Holy Sacrament, so do come if you are able to.

After a week of holiday last week (where it was even hotter than at home!) it is good to be back in the parish. I spent the day yesterday in the wonderful St Paul’s School and planning for an exciting set of announcements in next week’s newsletter…

This Sunday: “Follow me”

This Sunday we hear the calling of St Matthew, who went from being a tax collector to an apostle and the writer of one of the four gospels.

In our first reading, we hear about the story of redemption in the prophet Hosea (Hosea 5.15-6.6). Our Gospel reading is the calling of St Matthew and then the twin stories we know from the icon in St Paul’s: the two moments of healing of a young girl and a woman with haemorrhages (Matthew 9.9-13, 18-26).

Eagerly I seek you

The next parish quiet day will take place on Wednesday 17 June between 10am and 4pm. It will be at St James Finchampstead and will be led by Fr Sam. The theme is “Eagerly I seek you: Praying with the Psalms”. If you are interested, speak to Fr Sam or email Mary Cassidy mary.cassidy@spauls.org.uk

Tea and coffee are provided, but please bring your own lunch.

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller celebration

Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller History Month is celebrated every June in the UK to honour the rich cultural heritage, history, and contributions of these communities while raising awareness about their experiences and challenges.

An event of celebration will be held at St Sebastian’s Church, Nine Mile Ride on Friday 12 June at 7.30pm.

We shall be screening Crystal’s Vardo, invite speakers to share stories and have refreshments and prayers. All are most welcome.

The Creeds

The Tuesday evening Zoom Bible study is looking at the creeds, their development and the role they play in our faith. This is taking place over the next six weeks, starting on 9 June. For more information and login details, please email Revd Cara at woosehillminister@outlook.com

Birthday celebrations!

Jean Vaughan writes

I’m having a celebration in the church on 4 July. It would be good to see friends from the parish and an idea of numbers would be great, please! Look forward to hearing from you.

The celebrations will be from 1.30 to 5.30pm, with afternoon tea and entertainment from Fleur Stevenson, accompanied by guitar and double bass. No presents, please, but donations to be split between the Mothers’ Union and St Paul’s Church.

RSVP to jeanvaughan@hotmail.co.uk

This week’s calendar: a saint with an axe

5 June is the feast day of St Boniface, known as the “Apostle to the Germans”. He was an English monk and missionary who helped bring Christianity to much of what is now Germany. A famous story tells how he felled a sacred oak tree dedicated to the pagan god Thor to show the power of the Christian God; his courage, faith, and commitment to sharing the Gospel continue to inspire Christians today.
