#525 Anyone for Catan?

Fr Sam writes

I’ve nearly been in Wokingham a year now and it’s really good to see some big projects taking place.

The first is happening this Saturday with the St Nicholas board games afternoon at Emmbrook Village Hall. Do come along (with or without a board game!) and bring your friends who might find it fun.

The second is a launch on Sunday of our plans for children’s music at St Paul’s: we’ve seen children starting to sing in our choir, but we have been working on more plans and I will be asking your support with them. More information on Sunday morning (or in this email next week).

This Sunday: the calling of the Twelve

In our first reading this Sunday, we hear of the calling of God’s chosen people to be a “priestly kingdom and a holy nation” for the sake of the world (Exodus 19.2-8a). Our Gospel reading shows Jesus speaking about how “the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few”, and then commissioning the Twelve disciples to share in his work (Matthew 9.35-10.8).

Jubilate Deo!

A date for your diary! On Saturday 11 July at 7pm, we will be hosting “Jubilate Deo!”, a concert in celebration of 500 years of sacred music.

St Paul’s Choir, Louise and Christopher would like to invite you to an evening of popular choral anthems and organ music spanning the last 500 years. This promises to be a fantastic evening of music followed by fellowship and refreshments in true St Paul’s fashion! Please bring your friends and family. Donations will go towards the St Paul’s choral foundation and organ funds.

Eagerly I seek you

The next parish quiet day will take place on Wednesday 17 June between 10am and 4pm. It will be at St James Finchampstead and will be led by Fr Sam. The theme is “Eagerly I seek you: Praying with the Psalms”. If you are interested, speak to Fr Sam or email Mary Cassidy mary.cassidy@spauls.org.uk

Tea and coffee are provided, but please bring your own lunch.

This week’s calendar: a modern mystic

Monday 15 June sees the Church of England celebrate Evelyn Underhill (1875–1941), an Anglican writer and retreat leader who helped many people discover a deeper life of prayer. She was one of the first women to lecture clergy in the Church of England and became a widely respected spiritual guide. Her book Mysticism is one of the classic Christian works on meditation for the ordinary Christian.

Her example shows us that a rich spiritual life grows through prayer, attentiveness to God, and faithful daily practice.
